Description:
Charles Harford Lloyd was one of the leading musicians of Victorian England. While organist at Gloucester Cathedral and the Chapel Royal, he devoted himself to music education and concert activities at Oxford and Eton schools, and was a lifelong friend of Hubert Parry. This album sheds light on his long-forgotten chamber music. Most of Lloyd's works are vocal pieces for church, with only a few chamber pieces, of which the clarinet works are notable. The influence of Brahms can be heard in the Romantic language, and his ability to make the clarinet sing with extended melodies is noteworthy. Matthew Nelson teaches clarinet at the University of Louisville and is an internationally active player. In addition to concerts and master classes, he has made numerous solo and chamber music recordings.
