Born in England in 1945, Edward Gregson was introduced to music at the Salvation Army church and studied composition with Alan Bush at the Royal Academy of Music. He has taught at the University of London and the University of Manchester, and was president of the Royal Northern College of Music from 1996-2008. As a composer, his works are characterized by an accessible style that combines lyricism and construction, influenced by Walton and Vaughan Williams. He is internationally acclaimed, with works commissioned by major orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and continues to be active in his creative work even after turning 80 in 2025. This album features three major concertos and two piano works, including a world premiere recording. The Tuba Concerto is his most frequently performed masterpiece since its premiere in 1977. Other works include a viola concerto depicting goddesses from Celtic, Greek, and Roman mythology; the oboe concerto "Visions in a Dream," which has a symphonic character inspired by Coleridge's "Kubla Khan," a poem about the fifth emperor of the Mongol Empire; and Gregson himself playing piano and quietly echoing personal thoughts in two works.
