Description:
Jolly Braga Santos is one of the leading Portuguese composers of the 20th century, known for his six symphonies and other diverse works. From around 1960, he began to write works that retain a powerful energy and humor, incorporating chromatic diction and elements of folk music. In his later years, he reached a more contemplative style. This series includes chamber music composed in a wide range of periods from the 1940s to the 1980s. In the first collection, we can trace the transition in style from the first string quartet, written at the age of 21, to the string sextet of his later years. The second collection contains five works from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s, and offers a variety of sounds from different orchestras. The third collection includes a variety of small pieces, many of which are world premiere recordings. Many of these are world premiere recordings, and the composer's daughter, viola player Leonor Braga Santos, also joins the ensemble to add to the works.
