The hidden face of Bach's masterpieces, approached with a variety of ancient instruments and appropriate playing techniques. This is an album of Bach's greatest masterpiece, "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello", played on six different string instruments. The player, Ronan Kernois, is a baroque cello and gamba player who has been active with La Petite Bande, A Nocte Tempolis, Les Mouffatti, and many other French-speaking ancient instrumental ensembles. Although there are various theories as to how the "Suites for Unaccompanied Cello" were written, since there is no autograph score by Bach, Kernor assumes that all six suites were written individually and in different ways, based on the fact that only No. 6 is designated for a five-string instrument and there are other pieces that require irregular tuning. Focusing on the French-style suite format, we used the viol, an instrument in the French court music tradition, and the cello piccolo (small cello), which is also used in many of Bach's church cantatas, to record each suite with instruments we considered most suitable.The interpretation, carefully engineered by Rainer Arndt, a former baroque violinist himself, is flexible and consistent, conveying the infinite breadth and depth of the collection, from unexpected lightness to heavy and mournful sounds. The liner notes (in French, English, and German) by performer Kernoir himself, which touch on the rationale for the choice of instruments and the different theories of recent years, are also interesting.
