Description:
Another new ancient music ensemble from Belgium. The Ensemble Gloriosus, whose name comes from the Latin word Gloriosus meaning "glorious" or "splendid," was founded in 2022 by Patrick de Brabandere. Based in Ghent, the ancient capital of Belgium, the Ensemble Gloriosus is dedicated to bringing to light masterpieces that are overlooked even today, when ancient music has long since flourished. Founding conductor Debrabandere studied piano and organ before studying choral conducting with Eric van Nevel and joining his Ensemble Klende as a tenor singer. He received particular acclaim for his role as Evangelist in Bach's John and Matthew Passions. Here, the ensemble consists of three singers in each part, two violins, one cello, one double bass, one organ, and one alto, one tenor, and one bass saxophone. Fischer is known mainly as a composer of keyboard music, as his keyboard piece "Ariadne musica" (Ariadne of Music) is cited as a precursor to Bach's "Mean Clavier".The other famous work, "Mount Parnassus of Music" and the orchestral works show a marked French Baroque influence, and it is interesting to note that many of the Latin religious works in this collection were written in the style and sound of early Italian Baroque religious works by Schütz and Buxtehude, while the melodies of the solo voices show French-style grace.
