Description:
The "Idomeneo" was performed in Munich, a city of great interest, with a superb cast and rattles! Idomeneo was Mozart's first full-scale opera seria set in ancient Greece. However, today, "Idomeneo" is still less popular than the Da Ponte trilogy and "The Magic Flute," which were written after "Idomeneo. Rattle is one of the conductors who has fallen in love with "Idomeneo," which he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2004 and will conduct at the Berlin State Opera in 2020 and 23. This is a live recording of a concert performance in Munich in December 2023, Rattle's first season as principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and it features a conductor who has the work in his hands, an orchestra and chorus that follow with sensitivity and agility, and some of the best soloists of their time. The orchestra and chorus follow the conductor's mastery of the work with sensitivity and agility, and the soloists are among the finest of their day, delivering a masterful performance. Rattle's sound is light and colorful, clear but without losing its softness, and the tempi are free and easy. Staples in the title role and Kozenauer as Idamante have appeared with Rattle many times, including in "Idomeneo" at the State Opera Berlin in 2020 and 2011. He has the interpretation of the role under his control and has a thorough understanding of Rattle's music-making. The two sopranos, Douvier and Dreisig, are outstanding in terms of popularity and ability, and their beautiful voices and superb singing, both solo and chamber, are a delight to the ear. The dramatic performance, in which all the performers are united as one, is so appealing that it completely changes one's impression of this work. Idomeneo" was written at the request of the Elector of Bavaria and premiered at the Residenz Theater in Munich. The Herkulessaal, where this recording was made, is home to the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks as well as the Gasthaig, and is located in the Residenz district where "Idomeneo" was first performed. The performance of "Idomeneo" is a tribute to Munich's musical traditions, and the recording is a superb example of Rattle's careful preparation for his first season with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in many ways.
