British Music for Strings" by the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra of Pforzheim, conducted by Douglas Bostock. The fourth collection presents works by six composers, including Holst's daughter Imogen. Imogen's "Suite" is characterized by free time signatures, polyphonic writing, and complex harmony influenced by Grainger and her father Holst, and the final movement, "Gigue," is a technical piece using multiple keys and an effective violin solo. Conductor Bostock has praised this work as "a remarkable discovery. Jacob's "Denbigh Suite" is an accessible work based on baroque dances, and Dunhill's "Vectis Suite" is music evoking a typically English landscape, named after the ancient Isle of Wight. Busch's arrangement of Bennett's piano sonata "The Maid of Orleans" is based on the material. Pitfield's "Theme and Variations" shines with conservative but precise structure. The final work, Gibbs' "Shadows and Splendors," was written in his later years and first published in 2006.
