Description:
Born the youngest son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Xaver was the only one of his brothers to pursue a career as a musician. While carrying the shadow of his "great father" all his life, he left behind works mainly for piano, which was his forte, as well as for voice. The Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 1, is said to have been composed in 1804, when he was 13, and published in Vienna the following year. While the tonal style is reminiscent of his father's influence, the melody, harmony, and form all show a unique degree of perfection. The first movement begins strongly and develops concerto-like, with the piano and strings playing equal parts. In the second movement, the strings sing, and in the third movement, nine variations on a theme in the style of a song unfold, culminating in a dance-like coda. The next two violin sonatas are also important works that showcase his talents: the B-flat major sonata of 1806, an elegant work that shows the influence of his father Mozart and mentor Salieri, with equal dialogue between piano and violin; and the F-major sonata of 1811, a four-movement sonata in which he incorporates folk elements such as the polonaise and rondo that he favored. The F major sonata of 1811 is in four movements and brings out the charm of both instruments in a lively way, while incorporating folk elements such as the polonaise and rondo, which he favored. Hans-Jakob Stemmler, piano, is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main and works extensively in the fields of solo, chamber, and contemporary music. Violinist Muriel Kantoreggi was concertmaster of the Munich Chamber Orchestra from 1995 to 2008, and is a talented and energetic contemporary musician. Naxos Japan
