The program features two violin concertos by the great Bach in front of and behind each other, and a symmetrical arrangement of string works by Telemann and Albinoni, who were contemporaries and influences on Bach. The Ensemble Masque, led by French-speaking Canadian harpsichordist Olivier Fortin, plays all the parts except for the bass continuo, and their interpretation brings out the chamber music flavor inherent in the late Baroque ensembles. Fortin says that recording Bach's Violin Concerto with Sophie Gent, a member of the ensemble since 2003, has been "a longtime dream" (interview in booklet [French, English, German]). The work by Telemann, one of Germany's most popular composers, is a successful cross between Roman-style church sonata and Venetian-style solo concerto styles, and Kathleen Cascioca's performance as viola soloist is superb. The Sinfonia is a fascinating experience that allows you to appreciate all the musicianship of each performer.Aline Brondio, a talented engineer who has been active on the ALPHA label since the label's early days, has done a masterful job of clearly conveying the sound patterns woven by the players, and as one listens, the exquisite polyphonic structure of Bach's works and the connections among the other pieces come into view.
