English composer Havergal Bryan left behind 32 symphonies, including the gigantic "Gothic Symphony". However, it is not widely known that he composed cantatas, songs, and choruses before he began composing symphonies. The number of surviving choral works amounts to about 80, and the loss of another 20 or so scores leads us to believe that he actually left more than that. These choral works were composed in three main periods: the first, around 1905-06, when the young Bryan was a promising young man; the second, around World War I, when many were written for women's and children's voices, as many male chorus members were called to military service due to the war; and the third, around the end of World War II, when many of the choral works were written for children. This is indicative of the fact that many male chorus members served in the military due to the war. The third period was the 1920s and 1930s, and about a dozen choral works were composed sporadically during this period. Many of these works were written for the amateur choirs that flourished in Edwardian England at the time, and they are diverse in composition, including unaccompanied, piano accompanied, mixed chorus, high voice, and unison. The works for high voices and unison were intended for children's chorus.The Joyful Company of Singers, one of the UK's leading chamber choirs, was founded in 1988 and is highly regarded for its astonishingly wide repertoire, ranging from the 16th century to the present day, and for its rich expressiveness.
