Manuel Ponce, one of the leading Mexican composers of the 20th century, established a unique style that lies between the late Romantic style of composition and neoclassicism. In Japan, he is well known for his song "Estrellita (Little Star)" arranged by Heifetz and his guitar works, giving the impression that he is a "composer of guitar music," but in fact he is an excellent pianist and has written more than a few piano pieces. Many of his works are inspired by Mexican folk songs and traditional dances, and "Mexican Rhapsodies No. 1 and No. 2" use the folk dance Jarabe Tapatio and the folk song Las Mañanitas as material. The "Romantic Pieces" in the second half of the album are, for a change, heavily influenced by 19th century European salon music. All of the pieces are dedicated to women, many are written in three-part form, and the elegant compositions are appealing. Alvaro Cendolla was born in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1960. After studying piano locally, he went on to study with Bruno Leonardo Gerber in Buenos Aires and then with Peter Feuchtwanger in London.A recording of Ponce's complete piano works (8 CDs) is underway.
