Description:
Late Baroque composer Ranieri Capponi. Little is known about his life and works, but the few surviving sources indicate that he was a highly influential musician as well as a religious figure. In 1744, the year of his death, his brother Robert published in Florence 12 sonatas da camera (chamber sonatas), which were dedicated to Archbishop Clemens August (1700-1761) of Cologne, and thus his name is barely mentioned in history. The sonatas, whose scores are preserved in the Viennese library, were composed for melody instruments with basso continuo and reflect the musical style of the 18th century. On this album, an ensemble led by mandolinist Anna Torge performs Capponi's six sonatas. The baroque mandolin was a popular instrument of the time, so much so that Vivaldi and Scarlatti also wrote works on it, and Capponi's works are well suited to the tuning and playing techniques of the baroque mandolin.
