Classical French opera set in Scandinavia, performed by an elite ensemble of performers. This is a complete recording of "El Nourynd, Princess of Norway," performed in 1767 by F-A.D. Philidor (a.k.a. "Grand Philidor"), an enormously popular French opera composer of the mid-to-late 18th century who also made history as a master chess player, and who has remained popular despite frequent revisions since then. The Orkestel Nuur, an ancient instrumental ensemble based in Norway, where the opera is set, will support the leading French singers, who boast a rich track record in discovering unknown 18th century operas. Under the direction of conductor Martin Vorberg, who is already highly acclaimed for his interpretations of Mozart and Grétry's operas, they show solid solidarity backed by an outstanding sense of harmony in this recording, and deliver Philidor's colorful orchestrations, which are somewhere between Rameau and Haydn, with a wonderful sense of taste. The soloists responded to the orchestration with full and rich singing. The drama of Ernulind's attraction to Sandomir, the son of a nobleman who does not get along with his father Roald, and the tyrant Lissimer, who wields power and presses her into marriage, continues to thrill the audience until the happy ending.This is a substantial recording that will astonish you with the quality of the front-line Scandinavian old instrument playing, and also with the stylish music-making of the great Philidor, who remained popular up to the reign of Louis XVI.
