Description:
Justin Connolly was born in London. The son of a journalist and writer, he graduated from Westminster School and after serving in the military, he decided to become a musician. He studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Peter Racine Fricker and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult, and after graduation he studied at Yale University from 1963-65 for further study. After returning to Japan, he taught at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music before retiring in 1995 and ending his life in London in 2020. His music combines intellectual rigor, lyricism, and playfulness, and was once described by Pierre Boulez as "one of the most fascinating English composers. However, his performance opportunities have declined in recent years, partly due to a creative hiatus in the second half of the 20th century. This album offers a rare opportunity to re-evaluate his unique musical world. The performance is led by cellist Neil Hyde and members of the Kreutzer Quartet, with the participation of students from the Royal Academy of Music, providing a musical dialogue that transcends generations.
