Description:
Elegance and natural depth - In honor of Nelson Freire, rare broadcast recordings from the SWR archives are now available on CD. Many first time recordings! Freire was born on October 19, 1944 in Boa Esperança, Brazil, the youngest of five children, and began playing the piano at the age of four, where his talent was immediately recognized. He was "a difficult child to handle," as Freire recalls, but his parents gave him the freedom to learn the piano, and he spent his childhood playing on the beach on weekends, practicing two hours a day, and giving a variety of recitals each year. The following year he went to Vienna to study with Bruno Seidlhofer, a student of Franz Schmidt (in the same department as Goulda and Buchbinder). He and Martha Argerich have been friends since their student days in Vienna and later performed as a duo.In 1967, he signed an exclusive contract with CBS and released a solo album the following year, and in 2001, he signed a contract with Decca and released a series of albums with mature interpretations. He died in November 2021 at the age of 77. Chopin was Freire's favorite composer throughout his life. Although there is a 30-year gap between the three recordings on this album, they all have a natural, light, and flexible appeal. He also had a deep passion for Romantic works by Schumann, Brahms, and Debussy, and was known for his poetic and sensitive performances. On this disc, the Schumann Fantasie and Brahms Rhapsody showcase his superb technique and poetic expression. His recordings with orchestra are also valuable, and his 1979 recording of Scriabin's "Prometheus" is a precious record that shows the essence of his playing, which combines powerful sound and poetic expression. His outstanding technique and vivid tone are also evident in the fantasy "Momoprecorso" by Villa-Lobos, a composer from his native Brazil, and in the 1999 recording of Falla's "Nights in a Spanish Garden." In the Falla recording in particular, the young 26-year-old Freire's nimble and passionate playing is a joy to behold. Compared to his high reputation in Europe and the U.S. and his substantial career, Freire has left behind surprisingly few recordings: on CD2, two Schumann pieces have appeared on limited edition or minor label live recordings, but there are surprisingly no recordings of the other pieces, and none of the three pieces on CD3. Christoph Fratz, in his commentary on the original recording, wrote of his impression of these recordings. Freire's playing is always somehow light, somehow iridescent and shimmering." I recommend this set not only to fans of Nelson Freire, but also to piano lovers at large. Naxos Japan
