Description:
In mid-19th century Switzerland, where artists had limited access to professional education and employment opportunities, composers pursued their careers outside the country, such as in Germany. The German-style songs (lieder) they composed back home were enjoyed at home and in choral activities, and played an important role in the formation of national identity and in concerts. The album includes works by composers educated in Germany. Of particular note is the "Seven Songs" by female composer Yvonne Roethlisberger. This work was performed at the 1912 Swiss Composers' Festival, where it received recognition in a context in which works by women composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries were rarely presented. Swiss soprano Heinzen and pianist Meade carefully perform a diverse selection of songs in the German tradition, songs in dialect, and folk songs. Naxos Japan
