Sonia Wieder-Atherton, a cellist based in France and active internationally, has an extensive discography on the RCA and naïve labels that illustrates the depth of her interpretations and the breadth of her interests. The first two works of Bach's "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello" were released in 2020 on Record Store Day only analog (currently unavailable). Later, when Nos. 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 of the same cycle were released, CD versions appeared along with the limited-edition analog versions (ALPHA1009 and ALPHA1076, respectively), and now, after the completion of the complete cycle in 2024, Nos. 1 and 2 are finally available on the long-awaited CD release.The polished interpretation was recorded from midnight in an old monastery in central France with Pierre-Antoine Signoret, a trusted recording engineer since naïve, at a carefully considered tempo setting based on the original form of each movement, but with a natural appearance that does not give the impression of being strangely self-conscious. The recording was made in the middle of the night at an old monastery in central France. This is a masterful recording that I hope will reach the ears of many new listeners as it is released on CD.
