Description:
On the 100th anniversary of its premiere, Cagliari Opera presents "Nerone", the last work by Boito! Nerone (Emperor Nero) is tormented by guilt over the murder of his mother Agrippina. Simon, a sorcerer, tries to win Nerone's affections by dressing Asteria, a woman in love with Nerone, as a goddess. Rubria, a maiden who was once a priestess of Westa and was humiliated by Nerone, is now a reformed maiden who adores Fanuel, a Christian leader. These characters are set in the streets of imperial Rome, including the Appian Way, the sorcerer's underground temple, the catacombs, and the amphitheater, in a spectacle of faith, love, and hate. ...... Arrigo Boito is Verdi's "Otello" and "Falstaff. He is best known as the author of several operatic masterpieces, including Verdi's "Otello," "Falstaff," and Ponchielli's "Giaconda," as well as the composer of the opera "Mephistopheles," which he wrote as a young man and based on Goethe's "Faust. Influenced by Wagner and Verdi, both of whom he admired, his style is full of dramatic expression and serene lyricism, with elements of verismo.Boito's second opera, "Nerone," which was unfinished at the time of his death, was supplemented by composers Antonio Zumarellia and Vincenzo Tommasini and premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1924, conducted by Toscanini. Despite the success of the premiere, the opera was never performed again. In 2024, the 100th anniversary of the premiere, the Cagliari Opera, which has a reputation for discovering hidden masterpieces, will present "Nerone," a rare revival of a rare opera (ANSA News). (ANSA News). The title role will be sung by Mikheil Sheshaberidze, an up-and-coming tenor from Georgia with a reputation for dramatic roles. The role of Phanuel will be sung by Roberto Frontali, a well-known Verdi baritone who has made numerous visits to Japan. The role of Simon the Sorcerer will be played by Franco Vassallo, who was the Bard in Cagliari Opera's production of Circe's "Gloria" and was well received for his dark and emotional singing. The role of Asteria is played by Lilico Spinto, Valentina Boy, and other talented singers who are active mainly in Italian opera houses. The director, Fabio Cereza, is an up-and-coming young director who started out as an assistant director at La Scala in Milan and has been active at the Florence May Festival and the Valle d'Itria Music Festival. His spectacular stage productions, which seem to embody the composer's will, are a must-see. The Cagliari Opera Orchestra, led by Francesco Ciruffo, whose repertoire consists mainly of modern and contemporary works, plays Boito's dramatic, undulating music with rich shadows, and brings the work to life with singers of the finest grain.
