Description:
The composer Stradella, who was assassinated in the mid-to-late 17th century in northern Italy, was a man of great talent who moved from place to place because of a strained relationship with a man and a woman. His works, long overlooked because of the dramatic nature of his life, have been rapidly re-evaluated in recent years, thanks to the efforts of many musicologists and classical music performers, and especially to the enthusiastic introduction of Andrea De Carlo, a gamba player and conductor from Rome. He has recorded many major works for ARCANA with his own orchestra, the Mare Nostrum, and this time he focuses on his relationship with the talented singer Marcantonio Orrigoni, whom Stradella met a few years before his death. In addition to the three operas that the composer wrote for this singer, he has also collected movements that Stradella added to other composers' works when they were performed, and has created an album that presents the composer's late achievements in the form of songs from an imaginary music book that the singer carried with him. The solo singer is Silvia Frigato, a member of the legendary La Venexiana group, and a singer who has participated in many of De Carlo's recordings.The Ensemble Mare Nostrum again made the best use of the closeness and agility of their chamber music formation (2 violins, 1 gamba, 1 contrabass, 3 string players, and harpsichord) without wind instruments and with a thicker bass lineup (2 violins, 1 gamba, 1 contrabass, 3 string players, and harpsichord).
