Description:

Bol Zourian, a brilliant lute player, uncompromisingly approaches the performance conventions of the 16th century. Following his albums (RIC403, RIC434, RIC446) of polyphonic music by vocal composers such as Josquin Desprez and Gesualdo, whose famous instrumental works are not well known, and performed on the lute in the manner of the Renaissance, this time he goes one step further into the depths of the Renaissance period and explores the improvisations of musicians with the lute at that time. This time, the project takes a step further into the depths of the Renaissance period and proposes a CD album that brings back to life the improvisational style of musicians with lutes at the time. The recording uses five different instruments based on the 16th century model, including the Bray lute, which makes use of the late medieval harp as a reference and allows the listener to take advantage of the lute's chirpy sound. The works of the lute are traced back to the late medieval tradition when the use of plectrums, the ancestors of guitar picks, was common (some tracks are actually played using plectrums), and the extant works of composers from the period when the spread of printed music led to the spread of multi-fingered polyphonic playing, their improvisational development, polyphonic improvisation, and playing while reciting the works of poets both ancient and modern, have been rigorously examined. The musical environment surrounding the lute during the Renaissance period is thoroughly recreated through rigorous examination, including performances while reciting the works of ancient and modern poets. The collaboration with Monika Pustilnik, who plays the viola da mano, a stringed repellent instrument used in parallel with the lute and viola, is reminiscent of the high level of musical dialogue during the heyday of humanism.
