Austrian-born Gluck's "Iphigenie in Aulide" (Iphigenia in Aulis) was a key work in his successful foray into Paris, a masterpiece that broke new ground in Lully's established French opera repertoire. The overture alone is often performed alone in Wagner's arrangement, but for some reason there has never been a CD recording of the complete work on ancient instruments that comes close to what Gluck himself envisioned (Minkowski conducted only on video software; ERATO's Gardiner disc is performed on modern instruments with the Orchestre National de l'Opera de Lyon, OEHMS's Sperling disc is Wagner's arrangement). This recording is by Le Conseil de la Loge, a French group that has recently been making headlines for its recordings of Haydn's "Paris Symphonies" and Mozart's later works. Conductor Chauvin thoroughly read the composer's intention in every detail, and the soloists were selected based on the individuality of the singers in the premiere performance. The scene of the nativity of the goddess Diane, which was added later, was eliminated to follow Gluck's idea of avoiding dramatic effects with props, and the finale was guided by the oracle to the priest Carcas, the version that was performed for the first time. (This is also the world premiere recording of this version.) The chorus, which has a strong presence here and there, is sung beautifully by the elite chorus of Versailles. The chorus, which is present throughout the opera, is sung beautifully by Versailles' best chorus singers and played by the finest old instruments. (Naxos Japan)
