Friedrich Hermann was a German violin and viola player and composer. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory founded by Mendelssohn and was appointed professor in 1848 at the age of only 20, a position he held for almost 60 years. He produced numerous works while training a large number of younger students. Most of his works were pedagogical in nature, and he also left behind several works on violin technique. The 20 pieces on this album were written for teaching students and do not require a high level of technique, but each piece has a title and is designed to improve the player's technique and expressiveness. In contrast, the four pieces selected from the "Special Exercises," Op. 24, are technical pieces, with detailed descriptions of the bowing technique in the score, and are intended to be played in a universal manner that is applicable to today's music. Abigail Carr is a violinist who studied with Sergiu Luca at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, and then continued her studies at the Juilliard School.
