Description:

This is the third volume of the Bruckner From Archive, a CD of the complete symphonies selected from the 11,000 aircheck tapes of John F. Berkey, the executive director of the Bruckner Society of America and an active broadcaster, all of which are available for the first time. The series is supervised and commented on by the association's president, Bruckner scholar Benjamin Korstvedt. The North German Radio Symphony Orchestra conducts Bruckner No. 3 with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. Although he has no authorized Bruckner recording, he was one of the first to perform the premiere of the second draft of No. 3, revised by Fritz Eser, when the score was published in 1950. The Eser edition was used by conductors who preferred the second draft of No. 3, such as Matacic and Suitner, but when the second draft of the Novak edition was published in 1980, it gave up its mainstream position. However, the only major difference between the two versions is the presence or absence of the coda in the third movement (which is absent in the Eser version), and Barenboim and Dohnányi have been using it since then. This recording is a tribute to Eser's version, which played an important role in the history of the performance of No. 3, and to Schmidt-Isserstedt as its violinist. The music is composed in a precise and meticulous manner, without fuss or fuss. He also conducted the Swiss premieres of Bruckner Symphonies Nos. 4 and 9 with the Tonhalle Zurich, where he was chief conductor from 1906 to 1949, as well as the complete symphony concerts. In his lifetime, he conducted Bruckner's works more than 250 times. Here he conducts the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Bruckner's Fourth and Ninth Symphonies, and his fine control of tempo and dynamics in response to the changes in musical ideas allows him to fully express the majesty and deep emotion of the works.
