Rachel Baptiste, a female singer based in Dublin, was active in the British Isles in the mid-18th century, when Handel's fame was overwhelmingly celebrated. She was popularly known as the "Black Siren," a nickname derived from the water nymphs of ancient mythology who were known for their deceptive voices (the portrait on the cover of this CD was painted in the same period and the model is unknown). (The portrait on the cover of this album was painted at the same time, but the model is unknown). ) She has been acclaimed not only in Kilkenny, Limerick, and other parts of Ireland, but also in London, Bath, and other leading music centers in the United Kingdom. Glasgow-born Scottish singer Rachel Redmond has put together a full program of Handel arias, Baptiste hits, and works associated with Dublin at the time, along with the Irish Baroque Orchestra, whose recordings are well-known on LINN RECORDS. The program is clear, crisp, and full of energy. The clear, crisp, and assured voice of the singers reminds us of the "Black Sirens" of yesteryear.The instrumentalists who respond to the overflowing spontaneity by sublimating it into an elegant unity are also superb (hornist Anneke Scott, who also performs extensively as a soloist, is credited as a member of the orchestra).
