The collection features a collection of Messiaen songs by Barbara Hannigan, one of the world's foremost exponents of modern and contemporary vocal music, who is active in North America and Europe, and Bertrand Chamayou, another highly acclaimed pianist in the field of contemporary music. All of the songs in this collection have Messiaen's own lyrics, including "Poem for Mi," named after his wife Claire Delbos (nicknamed Mi) and moving between the sensual and the sacred; "Songs of Heaven and Earth," written shortly after the birth of their son and involving metaphors of family affection and religious love; and "Many Deaths," which takes the religious theme even further. The collection includes pieces ranging from "Many Deaths." Hannigan's singing ability and expressive power, which moves freely from dramatic, intense phrases to ecstatic expressions, are on full display in this rewarding listening experience.
