Description:
Glazunov: Ballet Music for "Raimonda" (Tamara Rojo version) New! English National Ballet (ENB), recorded by Philip Hobbs (Linn Records), has made great strides since Tamara Rojo's appointment as Artistic Director in 2012, attracting attention with a number of innovative projects such as "The Pirates" choreographed by Anna-Marie Holmes and "Giselle" by Akram Khan. Tamara Rojo has made a great leap forward. The ballet Raimonda, composed by Glazunov and choreographed by Petipa Hara, was Tamara Rojo's last project at ENB before her transition to Artistic Director of San Francisco Ballet, and also her debut as a choreographer. Raimonda" premiered in January 2022 to great acclaim (Shiori Kase, who was promoted to the highest rank of lead principal of ENB in the same month, performed the role of Raimonda).Tamara Rojo shifted the setting of the story from medieval France during the Crusades in Petipa's version to 19th century England and the Crimea, replacing the title character Raimonda with Florence Nightingale, a retinue nurse in the Crimean War, Jean de Brienne, a crusader knight, with John de Bryan, a British soldier, and Abderrahman, a Saracen knight, with Abdul Rahman, an Ottoman officer. The storyline is transformed into one with more dramatic ups and downs, centered on these three main characters. Ballet music specialist Gavin Sutherland, well-known in Japan as the conductor of the New National Theatre Ballet productions of "Sleeping Beauty (2014)" and "La Sylphide/Men Y Men (2016)," has reworked Glazunov's score based on this story. This is a session recording of Tamara Rojo's version of "Raimonda" by the English National Ballet Philharmonic, conducted by Gavin Sutherland. The recording engineer is Philip Hobbs of Linn Records. This is a remarkable release, both in terms of production and audio. Naxos Japan
