World premiere recording of Franz Schmidt's opera "Freddigundis" to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth. Following the great success of his opera "Notre Dame" premiered at the Vienna Court Opera in 1914, Franz Schmidt chose Felix Dern's "Freddigundis" as the subject for his next opera. The setting is the Frankish kingdom in the 6th century. The story of Freddigundis, a red-haired servant who, through her beauty and wiles, wins the throne as queen of King Kirperic I and enormous wealth, only to fall into ruin after a series of misdeeds is depicted with rich chromatic music reminiscent of Wagner and Richard Strauss. The leading role of Freddigundis is sung by Croatian-born Dunja Vejsovic. With her strong voice, she was acclaimed in Bayreuth and Salzburg as a Wagnerian singer in both mezzo-soprano and soprano roles. Conductor Ernst Melzendorfer studied with Clemens Krauss at the Salzburg Mozarteum and recorded the complete Haydn symphonies for the first time in history, as well as premiering many works with a wide repertoire that extends to contemporary music.
