This is the first live recording of Joseph Szigeti's 1955 concert in Seattle, USA, from the original tapes. The live recording of Joseph Szigeti's 1955 concert in Seattle, USA, has been reissued for the first time from the original tapes. The highlight is Vaughan Williams' Violin Sonata. According to O.W. Neighbour's "Vaughan Williams and His World", the concert featured the following two pieces: "Vaughan Williams' Violin Sonata", composed in 1954 and premiered on October 12, 1954, during a BBC program celebrating the composer's 82nd birthday, and "Vaughan Williams and His World", composed in 1955. Szigeti was the first to perform the sonata in concert, and in 1955 he said, "I want to make a record of it before the score is published. I want to make a record of it before the score is published. It is such a wonderful sonata that when it is published, everyone will be competing to play and record it," he wrote in a letter to an acquaintance. This comment is typical of Szigeti, who was not only a brilliant interpreter of classical works, but also a champion of the music of his time. In the mid-1950s, Szigeti was concerned about the tendency of concert programs to be biased toward standard masterpieces and the tendency of audiences to hear only what they knew, and in the mid-1950s he presented a three-day series of concerts called "11 Masterpieces of the 20th Century. The composers featured were Bartók, Bloch, Busoni, Debussy, Hindemith, Honegger, Ives, Prokofiev, Ravel, Webern, and Vaughan Williams. He recorded the works of ten of them, but Vaughan Williams was the only one he finally failed to record. In a later letter to Vaughan Williams' widow Ursula through his publisher, he wrote, "I played this piece quite a bit at universities around the United States around 1959, but I was unable to locate the tapes. It is a pity that young star performers today do not take up this masterpiece and difficult piece" (from the above-mentioned book).The date of recording is unknown, but it is believed to be a short time after the first performance, and the score was not published until the following year in 1956, so the work was not yet well-known. This is an extremely important recording in the history of Szigeti's music, and one can feel the spirit of Szigeti's efforts to bring the work to the forefront of the public's evaluation.
