Opera" is said to have been established around the end of the 16th century. Originally a performing art that aimed to revive Greek tragedy, in the 17th century, comic elements were incorporated between the great heroic plays in response to audience demand. Heroic plays evolved into opera seria, while comical plays were performed separately from the storyline as "intermezzos" (interludes) and became popularly known as opera buffa. This album presents two of Pergolesi's most famous intermezzos, performed by the Boston Festival of Ancient Music Chamber Ensemble, directed by Paul Odette & Stephen Stubbs, who have an established reputation for their Baroque stage works. The performances are "The Wife's Maid" and "Rivietta and Tracollo," but Odette and Stubbs combine other works by Pergolesi and Leo here to give the productions a fast-paced development.
