The Italian keyboardist Andrea Buccarella has been gaining more and more attention in recent years after winning the 2018 Bruges (Bruges) Old Music Competition as a soloist. Following his RICERCAR debut (RIC407), which traces the evolution of the toccata, this album provides an overview of the history of fantasia (fantasy music). Like the toccata, the fantasia is a relatively free form of composition derived from improvisation by the keyboard player, and has a long history. The program traces the transition of music history, beginning with the 16th century Italian and northern European (British and Dutch) traditions, continuing through the 17th century, and ending with Bach at the beginning of the 18th century. In the older works, the Italian harpsichord, with its fine grain, produces a surprisingly fresh and well-rounded flow of sound, while the late German Baroque works are fascinating for their dynamic musical development that makes the most of the instrument's flavor. The two masterpieces by Bach, both of which are well-known by pianists, can be heard again in this context as works in their historical context, and the brilliant performances give the works a fresh new look.The eloquent interpretations that make full use of the exquisite work of Philippe Humeau, a keyboard maker of ancient instruments who is highly trusted by ancient instrumentalists mainly in French-speaking countries, make this a fulfilling recording that will open your eyes to the possibilities of the harpsichord as a musical instrument.
