The contrast between the tone quality of the double chorus form and the instrumental ensemble is astonishing! Mouffat's masterpieces with some of the best French composers】The only surviving church music works by Mouffat, a genius composer of the late 17th century who became music director of Passau Cathedral in southern Germany at the end of the 17th century and left many instrumental ensembles and organ pieces during his short life, are performed by a brilliant ensemble of musicians. Georg Muffat was born in the Savoie region, which straddles present-day southeastern France and the Piedmont region of Italy, to a family of Scottish ancestry. He was also briefly employed at Salzburg Cathedral, but was later welcomed at Passau Cathedral, where he was one of the first to introduce the advanced Italian and French styles to the German-speaking world. Despite his diverse background, he considered himself a German. The Mass "Rest in the midst of labor" is a large work in the form of a double chorus, in which the 24 vocal and instrumental parts are divided into four choirs, and the sound of the four choirs is opposed to each other, while using the melody of the same name as the axis for the polyphonic development of the entire chapter.The brass and percussion instruments, strings, and chorus continue to intermingle in a lustrous interplay of sound in this masterpiece, which unfolds in a familiar narrative style characteristic of the mid- to late-Baroque period. The ensemble is led by Adrien Mabille and Volk-Fritjof Smith on woodwind cornet, Alexis Laens on sackbut trombone, Pierre-Yves Madouf on trumpet, and Jeremy Papaserzio on dulcian, all of whom are well known in Japan. The ensemble is led by countertenor Damien Guillon, who has many fans in Japan, and delivers a blissful moment of sound that echoes through the historic chapel of the Château de Versailles. The motet by Biber, who is also known for his "53-voice Mass," is a delightful addition to the program. Naxos Japan
