The songs from "The Three-Penny Opera" were performed live at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July 2023 by the Comédie-Française and Le Balcon. The music is based on Elisabeth Hauptmann's German translation of John Gay's "Beggars Opera," adapted and scripted by Brecht, with music by Weill, and the "Three-Penny Opera," which was a big hit. The music is sung by the actors of the Comédie-Française and performed by Le Balcon, led by Maxime Pascal, and their interaction makes the music very lively. The lyrics are a new French translation. The music seems to have been slightly rearranged from the original form in order to recreate the enthusiasm of the first performance in 1928. The lyrics of "PAUV' MADAME PEACHUM Poor Mrs. Peachum," with music by Weill to lyrics by the legendary singer Yvette Gilbert, who charmed Lautrec and others, is a rare recording, the first time it has been made.The music is originally an opera/musical with dialogue, but in this album, Thomas Ostermeier, who is in charge of this production, narrates between songs as the mouthpiece.
