Shumsky's best form is shown in this live performance from 1980] Although Shumsky had a remarkable career at an early age, with his talents recognized by Skotowsky and Auer, his fame was limited to the United States. In the late 1950s, he began to devote more time to teaching younger musicians and performing in ensembles than as a soloist. The turning point for Shumsky came in the 1970s, when he recorded the complete Mozart violin sonatas with Artur Balsam for the Musical Heritage Society and the Bach unaccompanied sonatas and partitas at Balsam's urging, which were well received and led Shumsky to resume his solo career in earnest. With these well-received recordings, Schumsky resumed his career as a soloist in earnest, and his European career took off with the great success of his London debut recital in 1981. The recording presented here is a live recording of a concert in January 1980. The recording has not been edited except for the removal of some performance noise (mainly music flipping noises) and audience noise, and it conveys the real image of Shumsky's live performance. The fluidity of his playing with steady technique, the beauty of his sound even in forte and fast passages, and his sense of form without slackness are perfect for the classics, but his modern, humorous expression in the Prokofiev is also superb. Pianist Sutherland was recruited by Seiji Ozawa, who had noticed his talent and created the post of "principal pianist" at the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, where he was music director at the time. Although he and Shumsky are about the same age difference as parents and children, they perform as a united duo. It is known among violin fans that Shumsky had a Stradivarius "Rode" made in 1715, but the one played in this recording was made by Enrico Rocca in 1905, and there are four pages of color photographs in the booklet.Shumsky bought this instrument in 1977 after falling in love with it at first sight when he tried it, and used it differently from the "Rohde" depending on the conditions of the moment, but both instruments sounded so good that even renowned musicians and critics did not notice the difference. The booklet also includes a 3-page recollection by Shumsky's son Eric, a photo of Shumsky in the 1926/27 season (age 9) when he appeared successively with the Philadelphia, New York, and Boston orchestras, and two photos of Efrem Zimbalist and Shumsky (one taken in 1931 and the other in 1931).
