A tribute to the musical culture of their home country by Croatian-born musicians] Dejan Lazic, a popular pianist with many recordings on CHANNEL CLASSICS and ONYX, and Ivan Leipsic, principal conductor of the Munich Chamber Orchestra, were both born in Croatia, just one year apart in age. This album is their tribute to the musical culture of the Istria (Italian name Istria) peninsula in western Croatia. The Istrian peninsula, which borders Italy and Slovenia, is a rich source of folk music. The unique use of the pentatonic scale, distinctive harmonies and rhythms have been handed down through choral music and folk dances. Laczyk was also an early composer, and his "Piano Concerto in the Istrian Style," which opens this album, is an imposing work in five movements, with a playing time of over 36 minutes. The exotic sound and virtuosity of the piano can be enjoyed. The following "Istrian Suite" is a work based on folk music by Devcic, a leading figure in the Croatian music world. The music is interesting, with some passages reminiscent of Bartók and others with a different feel.The sopira used in track 10 is a folk instrument with a reed, and its distinctive sound is considered a symbol of the region. The final piece, "Alternation of Istrian Folk Hymns," is a set of 12 variations on the theme of the melody of the Istrian folk hymn. Naxos Japan
