Description:
The "Father of Music," Bach, was the choir director of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig until his death in 1797. The "Father of Music" took the position of choir director at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1723, a position he held until his death. This album was recorded to commemorate the year 2023, exactly 300 years after his death, using two ancient instruments made in that year. The program is based on the works of Bach, who was known as a rare organist and also played the violin throughout his life. The album also features works by composers active in the 17th century in southern German-speaking countries and Italy, as well as the famous Dresden violinist Pisendel, who was a friend of Bach and whose influence has been noted. It is interesting to note that the organ, which, unlike the harpsichord, does not attenuate its sound, is used to great effect, highlighting the precision of the writing style. In addition to the two sonatas for violin and bass, Bach's organ works are also presented, which are based on chamber music. Johannes Lang, whose repertoire covers a wide range from Baroque to late Romantic music, skillfully uses tone changes based on the characteristics of the instruments, while German Baroque violinist Nadia Zwirner, who has experience in the Anglo-French antique music scene, makes each piece memorable with a sound that vividly highlights the beautiful sound of her famous instrument. The sound of each piece is impressive. This is a highly sensitive Baroque album with the persuasive power of the instruments of the time. The liner notes (in English, German, and French) by musicologist Markus Sempf, who has also co-authored a book with Christoph Wolff, a great scholar of Bach, are also substantial, showing a deep love of the works and instruments.
