Description:
The violinist Judith Shapiro, who was acclaimed by Stravinsky, is now being reissued in a collection of rare recordings. Mozart's Fifth is Shapiro's only concerto recording. Born in Buffalo, New York, Judith Shapiro (1914-2007) was a highly acclaimed soloist, concertmaster, and chamber musician, performing classical and contemporary music, as well as pop and film music, in a wide variety of fields. He performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1941, she moved to Los Angeles, where she was invited to join the studio orchestra of RKO, then known as one of Hollywood's Big 5 film companies, and became the first female concertmaster in Hollywood. She became the first female concertmaster in Hollywood history. She later moved to Paramount, where she remained as concertmaster until 1965, and also worked in the pop music field, leading the bands of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others, on numerous occasions. In the classical music field, as first violin of the American Art Quartet, which he founded in 1943, he earned a reputation comparable to that of the Juilliard String Quartet on the East Coast, and in the 1950s, as concertmaster of the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, he performed Jascha Heifetz's Lalo: Spanish Symphony, In the 1950s, as concertmaster of the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, he participated in recordings of Lalo's Spanish Symphony, Zigoinelwaizen, Wieniawski, and Bruch. As a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, he has been actively involved in contemporary music, especially Stravinsky, for whom Shapiro received a very high evaluation. As a soloist, he has performed under the direction of Fritz Reiner, Eugene Goossens, and William Steinberg, as well as with Arthur Schnabel, Lily Krauss, Rudolf Firkushny, and Bruno Walter on piano. He was a professor of violin at the University of Southern California from 1956, and performed with Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky, who later became his colleagues. Biddulph's first release in honor of Shapiro, whose versatility is hard to believe today, features his only concerto recording as a soloist, Mozart; as a chamber musician, a collection of string quartet pieces; and on the pops side, two Victor Young masterpieces.
