Description:
Songs that Changed the World Reimagined for Violin and Piano In March 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic, when one might sink into a feeling of helplessness, the Belgian violinist Elsa de Lacerda and the Belgian pianist Pierre Solo, also from Belgium, have commissioned contemporary Belgian and French composers to reinterpret and sublimate for violin and piano a number of songs about the power and strength of the people that have changed the world. In memory of those who have changed the world, they commissioned contemporary Belgian and French composers to create new interpretations for violin and piano of songs about the power and strength of the people. The songs include "Apesar de voce," a protest song by a Brazilian national singer; "Grandola, Vila Morena," which became the "smoke signal" for the Carnation Revolution in Portugal; "Wind of Change," by the German rock band Scorpions, about Soviet glasnost; "The Blacks of the American South," by the American band The Scorpions; and "The Souls of the Blacks," by the French band The Scorpions, about the blacks of the American South. The German rock band Scorpions sang "Wind of Change" about Soviet glasnost; Billie Holiday sang "Strange Fruit," a song by Lewis Allen about the horrors of discrimination against blacks in the American South, which has been sung by various singers; "Over the Rainbow," sung by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, which now has a connotation of LGBT solidarity; and "The World of the Rainbow," sung by the apartheid activist and former president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, which has been performed by many artists. Asimbonanga," sung by apartheid activist Johnny Clegg about Nelson Mandela, who was in prison at the time, saying, "We can't see him," and the most famous Chilean nueva canción (song of social change), "Untitled," also known as Frederic Jefsky's The "International," sung around the world as a revolutionary song, "Ain't Got No, I Got Life," a message song by Nina Simone based on a number from the musical "Hair," and "Independence," a big hit by Grand Carré, the father of Congolese music. The album includes "Andepandance (Independence) Cha Cha," a hit song by Grand Kalé, the father of Congolese music. Some of the songs are so newly interpreted that the original melodies are unrecognizable, but each composer and the two performers pay homage to the great music in their own way, creating an album that is well worth listening to.
