The Berliner Philharmoniker's summery Waldbuehne Concerts conclude with a performance of "The Winds of Berlin" from the comedy "Madame Luna". The audience whistles and finger-whistles at the promised part in the middle of this piece (Luft in Berliner Luft, by the way, also means "breath" or "air"). For Berliners, it is like the Radetzky March at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. Here is an album of orchestral works, centering on the overture by Paul Reinke, the composer of the "Winds of Berlin," which seems to be a rare and hard-to-find album. This is a project that is very typical of cpo. The overture to the opera of the same name recorded at the beginning of the album features a familiar melody. As a native Berliner, Linke was active in the local theater and wrote many comedies, including "Madame Luna," a comedy about Berliners in the world of the moon, and founded the genre known as "Berlin operetta. He was awarded the title of honorary citizen of the city of Berlin in 1941. His works, with their beautiful melodies, are rarely heard in their entirety, but just listening to the overtures and waltzes on this album will give you a glimpse of the composer's charm.
