Composer Bertolt Damke was born in Hanover, Germany. Studied theology in Frankfurt, then music with Ferdinand Ries and others; became a theater violinist in Hanover as a teenager and later a court viola player while composing choral works, oratorios, psalms, and cantatas; moved to St. Petersburg in the 1840s, where he lived until 1853, He lived there until 1853. He then moved to Brussels before settling in Paris in 1859, where he lived for the rest of his life. In Paris, he became friends with Berlioz, who called Damke "a great musician and artist. Included on this album is a performance from a new edition of Damke's chamber music score, discovered in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and published in 2020. It was finally performed and recorded, some 160 years after its composition, by three performers, including Wen-Sing Yang, a cellist of great renown who was interested in his work.
