Sergei Koussevitzky, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra
Description:
This is the first CD release of a live recording of a June 1950 concert by Sergei Koussevitzky (1874-1951), one of the great conductors of the 21st century, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Born in Russia, Koussevitzky was a local double bassist before coming to the U.S. In 1924 he became the permanent conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for almost a quarter of a century, raising the orchestra to a high standard and introducing American audiences to French and Slavic music. This performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra is from the year after he resigned as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1949 due to health problems. 75 years old, Koussevitzky was still very active, performing Beethoven's 9th in Paris just before this concert. The concert was recorded in the same year. The margins of the album contain documentary audio (in English), including interviews that documentary maker John Transky conducted between 1992 and 2017 with former members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra who played under Koussevitzky, to show The audio includes interviews with former members of the Boston Symphony and London Philharmonic orchestras from 1992 to 2017, and shows how much he was loved by and influenced the orchestras. All of the music, including that used here, has been remastered by engineer Rani Spahr, and although it is in mono, the sound is clear and deep. The booklet also features a tribute to this rare recording and performance by Rob Cowan, an authority on historical recordings (in English). Naxos Japan
