Description:
Armenian-born, Chicago-based cellist Ani Aznavourian and pianist Marta Aznavourian perform beautiful works by composers from their homeland. The album opens with an ancient folk song arranged by Komitas, an Armenian Orthodox priest, composer, and musicologist active in the early 20th century, and continues with a glorious ode to Khachaturian's native Yerevan. Next, works by Khachaturian's next generation of composers, Babadjanian and Terteryan, are placed, leading to Arutyunian, Sharafian, and contemporary works. Sharafian's "Petrified Dance" is in memory of an Armenian warrior who lost his life in battle. The final piece on the program, the world premiere recording of "Mount Ararat," was commissioned by the duo. Mount Ararat is said to be the place where Noah's ark washed up in the Old Testament, but it was inhabited by Armenians in ancient times, and even though it is now Turkish territory, it is still revered as a "sacred mountain" by Armenians and a source of their creative power.
