A co-production by the Donizetti Festival and the Cuban National Opera, "The Daughter of the Regiment" is full of rich colors and bouncy fun! The setting is the Alpine Tyrol in the early 19th century. Marie, who works in the regiment's wine cellar, is in love with Tonio, the young man who saved her life. Tonio enlists in the army to be with Marie. However, Marie, long thought to be an orphan, turns out to be the daughter of a nobleman who was separated from her parents at an early age, and the two are separated for a time when she is sent to Paris as an apprentice. Marie is not accustomed to life in Paris, and when a proposal is made to marry the duchess's nephew, she is not keen on the idea. Marie is not keen on the idea. Then Tonio, who has been promoted to captain and is visiting Paris, appears before her... "The Daughter of the Regiment," first performed in 1840, was written by Donizetti in 1840. It is said that Donizetti composed this work in a short time at the request of the Opéra-Comique in Paris. At the time, operas by Italian composers were very rare, but the premiere at the Opéra-Comique was a great success, and the work became a popular program that was performed again and again. This production, conducted by the up-and-coming Michele Spoti, is characterized by a lively military style and elegant sound design. The effective use of the conga, a Cuban percussion instrument, on stage is also noteworthy. Sarah Branch as Marie sings in a luminous voice, freely singing in the upper register, and portrays an alluring female figure.John Osborne as Tonio echoes the high C repeatedly in his youthful voice, and Paolo Bordogna as Shulpis anchors the entire ensemble with his steady singing. Adriana Bignani Lesca's comical singing as the real mother is also worth listening to. Cuban film director Luis Ernesto Doñas's production replaces the setting with modern-day Cuba and the U.S., and the colorful sets and costumes make for a spectacular depiction of the story.
