Description:
This album features a collection of piano works by Polish composer Henryk Gretzki, known for his "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs," played by his daughter Anna Gretzka. Gretzky spent his early years at the Lipnik Conservatory, where he studied composition with Boleslaw Schabelski in 1955, and the first piece he wrote was the "Four Preludes," which opens the album. The sonata, written in 1956, is dedicated to his future wife, Jadwicka Ruraniska. Other pieces include "From a Bird's Nest" and "Various Pieces," both written in the same period, as well as pieces composed and revised later in the 1980s and 1990s. The piece "To Anna" was written by Gretzky in his later years for the charity auction of the Polish national actress Anna Dimna's charitable organization. These pieces, which range from avant-garde to familiar folk-style pieces, are performed by Gretzky's daughter Anna Gretzka, a pianist who began playing piano at the age of four, graduated from the Karol Szymanowski Conservatory, and is now an internationally acclaimed pianist.
