Description:
Joseph Boulogne Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) was born on Guadeloupe, one of the West Indies islands in the Caribbean Sea, to a plantation owner and a slave woman from the Wolof tribe. In 1769, he became a member of Gosek's orchestra and showed great skill as a violinist. He also composed numerous popular operas, symphonies, and chamber music. During the French Revolution, Saint-Georges was a soldier, leading a black troop he had organized at the request of the revolutionary government. However, he was forced out of the army and imprisoned for his friendship with the royal family before the Revolution, and although he was released after Robespierre's downfall, he died of illness, and after his death, his music was rapidly forgotten during the Second Empire, when slavery was restored....This documentary directed by Martin Mirabel sheds new light on the extraordinary life and musical works of Saint-Georges, with performances of his works and testimonies from scholars and musicians of 18th century French music. A bonus video includes concert footage of Saint-Georges' music, plus works by his contemporaries Mozart and Haydn. The Cambini-Paris Quartet, together with soprano Magali Léger, whose repertoire includes operettas and French songs, perform the music of Saint-Georges' legacy with freshness. Naxos Japan
