Description:
The two sonatas, originally written for Brahms's clarinet and then converted to viola sonatas, are so dynamic and full of song that one could be forgiven for thinking they were written for the cello when listening to Knyazev's performance. The expression is more dynamic and deeper, and the singing in every corner of the piece is truly Knyazev's own. The coupling is a cello and piano performance of the Lieder for bass and piano, which was almost Brahms' last work (he also wrote a collection of chorales for organ later in his career). Co-performing with him is the Lithuanian-born Winkus, who has received great acclaim at Carnegie Hall and other major halls around the world, and also duoed with Evgeni Bojanov on "Argerich with Friends 2018" (AVA10572). This is a wonderful performance that sheds new light on these works, which can be considered the swan song of Brahms's last years. Naxos Japan
