Alessandro, father of Domenico Scarlatti, who left over 500 sonatas for harpsichord, also wrote wonderful works for harpsichord, concentrated in his later years. In Alessandro's case, it is mainly a toccata, but it is more of a pedagogical exercise for the keyboard instrument, and does not have as many improvisational elements as the works of the same name by his contemporaries Georg Muffat and Johann Pachelbel. The toccata is not a stand-alone piece, but is combined with an allegro, adagio, and fugue, allowing the listener to enjoy a variety of melodic expressions in a single piece. Marcello di Rizza, who will perform the piece, is a specialist in Alessandro Scarlatti's works.
