Description:
From Versailles! Jean-Baptiste Lully was a leading figure in the creation of the ideal form of French court music during the reign of Louis XIV in 17th century France, known as the "Great Century. However, while his operas have been enjoying a remarkable revival in recent years, his grand motets (religious works), in which instrumental and vocal music intermingle in incomparably beautiful ways, have been surprisingly little recorded, despite their importance as an inspiration to subsequent generations of composers. The talented Stéphane Fugé, who is eager to revive them, has selected three pieces from the early, middle, and late periods for this album. These are all rare and valuable new recordings by a genuine French old instrumental ensemble. The 24-member string ensemble, featuring a large reconstructed viola and bass de violon, the elegant low brass instrument Serpan, two theorbo instruments, and a keyboard, all in uncompromising pursuit of the French 17th century style, creates an authentic and overwhelming sound right from the beginning of "Miserere".The vocal lineup, with occasional solos, includes many talented singers of the new and old generations, such as Gwandrine Blondere, who also appeared as Cupid in "Semele" (RIC 437) conducted by Alarcon, the talented Benoit Arnoux, and Marc Moillon, who can sing from the Middle Ages to the present day. The festival will be held in December 2021. In addition, Japanese singers such as Ayako Yukawa, who performed in Rameau's "Anacreon" (Kita-Topia) in December 2021 under the direction of Ryo Terakabe, and Kumi Sakamoto, who has been busy in France and Belgium, will participate in the festival. The engineering of master engineer Frederic Briand, who captured the full interpretation echoing through the chapel of Versailles, completed in the last years of Louis XIV, with the natural setting of the place, is also superb.
