Born in the year of Monteverdi's death, Alessandro Stradella was a fugitive due to gender issues and ended his short life at the hands of an assassin, despite his spectacular success in the Italian music world at the time when Cavalli and Cesti were retiring from the front lines. It was not until the latter half of the 20th century that the light was fully shed on his compositional achievements, but after decades of research and performance practice, the Ensemble Mare Nostrum, a hard-core group of the Italian classical music world, has been making systematic recordings in recent years that have brought about a renewed and vigorous reappraisal of his work.
