Description:

Noboru is a boy who loves the sea and lives with his widowed mother. One day, Noboru finds a peephole that leads to his mother's room and witnesses an affair between her and Ryuji, a "man of the sea." He sees Ryuji as a hero and yearns for him. However, his admiration turns to disappointment when Ryuji begins to help his mother run a western goods store, and finally... In 1986, Hans Werner Henze, a composer fascinated by Yukio Mishima's works, began to adapt "The Afternoon Tug" into an opera. In 1986, fascinated by Yukio Mishima's works, composer Hans Werner Henze began to adapt "The Afternoon Tug" into an opera, "The Sea Betrayed," which was completed in 1989, using powerful orchestration and singing to depict the fragile love between a man and a woman and the fragile collapse of a boy's ideal. The following year, "The Afternoon Tug" was premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, followed by a Japanese version of "The Afternoon Tug" planned by Gerd Albrecht and performed by the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in concert form in 2003. This Japanese version was then substantially revised by Henze and premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2006. This album is a recording of the premiere performance at the Vienna State Opera, which was held without an audience in the midst of the Corona disaster. The main character Noboru is sung by Josh Lovell, a young Canadian tenor with a wide repertoire ranging from Handel to Britten. Ryuji is sung by veteran tenor Bo Skowhus.Vera-Lotte Beckerper, who plays the widowed Fusako, also does a fine job. Simone Young's command of the orchestra's colorful, percussion-heavy sound is also noteworthy. Naxos Japan
