Description:
The world's first film version! A profound and vivid stage image directed by Keith Warner 《Painter Matisse》 Matisse, a religious painter, helps Schwalb, the leader of the Lutheran peasant rebellion, and his daughter Regina, escape. Gilvester, the officer who pursued them, blames Matisse, but does not arrest him because Matisse is a favorite of Archbishop Albrecht. The archbishop accepts Lutheran merchant Liedinger's offer of a "book-burning ban" when he prevents a brawl between Catholics, Lutherans, and students, but is rebuked by Archbishop Lorenz, the deputy archbishop, who eventually signs a document authorizing book burning. While books were being burned one after another in Liedinger's house, Ludwig Luther's proposal to marry Liedinger's daughter Ursula to the archbishop was discussed. But it is Mathis whom Ursula loves. Mathis tells her, "I cannot marry you because I am taking part in the Peasants' War," and leaves her. The battle then rages on... "Matisse the Painter" is an opera consisting of seven scenes written by Hindemith in 1934-35 from a libretto based on Matthias Grünewald, a 16th century German religious painter. The story, based on the Lutheran peasant revolt of the early 16th century after the Reformation, was regarded as an indirect criticism of the German political system at the time of its composition, and its planned premiere in Berlin in 1935 under Furtwängler's direction was banned by the Nazis. Hindemith was working on the libretto for the opera, and at Furtwängler's request, wrote the symphony "Matisse the Painter" using material from the opera, which was premiered prior to the opera and was a great success. However, the famous "Hindemith Affair" broke out, which resulted in the banning of the opera. The opera caused a sensation in Germany and abroad. The stage for this video was created by Keith Warner, who is known for his theatrical direction of operas, and features a huge statue of Christ on a cross that changes its shape as the story progresses. The stage is filled with the fierce feud between the Lutherans and the Old School, and the protagonist Mathis (Wolfgang Koch), who is torn between the two factions, is led by Bertrand de Billy, while Hindemith's vivid music is accompanied by a cast of outstanding singers who deliver shading and deep acting.
